Porsche wins in 2023 What Car? Awards

23/2/2023

The 718 Cayman GTS has yet again earned the title of Sports Car of the Year at the What Car? awards, for the second year running. In the GTS, the handling, style and everyday usability of the 718 Cayman has been coupled with a charismatic naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six ‘boxer’ engine.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has also been named ‘Performance Car of the Year’ in the magazine’s Car of the Year Awards. It marks the third time running that a Porsche Taycan has taken the crown, reflecting the model’s established position as not just an electric vehicle, but a performance car with any powertrain.
Being named a winner means that What Car? magazine recognises each model as one of the very best cars to buy, and as a leader of their respective class.

In presenting the Taycan Cross Turismo with the Performance Car of the Year Award, the What Car? judges commented: “To say that the Taycan Cross Turismo is an outstanding performance car that just happens to be electric is to do it a disservice because its electric nature enhances the driving thrills. Accelerator responses are as fast as flicking a switch, and you might want to warn your passengers before putting your foot down, such is the force that pushes you back into your seat. The ride and handling balance feels tailor-made for British B-roads, too. And the Cross Turismo is more practical than many other performance cars. In short, it's a car that you’ll love living with, whether you’re on a dream road or just ferrying the kids to school.”

All Taycan models benefit from an innovative electric drivetrain with 800-volt architecture. The all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension of the Cross Turismo also ensures confident handling and control off the beaten track.

As well as pioneering developments in electric motor technology, Porsche is continuing the development of hybrid powertrains and emotional petrol engines. In the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, the combination of its evocative, flat-six naturally aspirated engine with the balance of its mid-engine chassis, presents a package to enthral driving enthusiasts. By awarding the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 the top prize for Sports Car of the Year, the writers at What Car? could not have been more emphatic in their praise for the nimble, two-door coupé. The judges remarked: “While its rivals are specialists in one or two areas, the Cayman manages to be a master of all things, especially in GTS guise. Its 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine pulls effortlessly from low revs and makes a wondrous noise. Plus, the Cayman demonstrates sublime control in corners and has beautifully precise steering. And yet, despite all of its sports car focus, the Cayman can still serve as a comfortable daily driver, because the adaptive suspension soaks up all but the worst lumps and bumps, and the driving position is spot on."
